Tooth loss is something that awaits everyone eventually. You can postpone this process with proper teeth care and regular dental visits (at least once every 6 months) but you cannot escape it. However, this does not mean that you cannot avoid dentures and bridges. On the contrary, there is a way to feel and look just like having your own teeth - dental implants.
Dental implant is literally the replacement of the root of a lost tooth or teeth. It refers to a titanium post which is implanted on the site of the missing tooth or teeth in the jawbone. Within three to six months, the jawbone grows over this post and holds it in place. When the implantation site is healed, the dentist attaches a new tooth (a crown) to a small post called the implant abutment that extends from the titanium post.
The greatest advantage of dental implants is the fact that they are permanent and that they can last a lifetime with proper care. Unlike dentures, implants do not have to be taken out of the mouth to be cleaned and unlike bridges, they do not involve any modifications of the nearby teeth. Implants indeed feel and look just like real teeth which does not only make you feel better but look better as well because it is impossible to tell the difference between a natural tooth and an implant.
You can have a dental implant inserted at any age but it is crucial that your gums are healthy and that you have enough jawbone to support the implant. Implants can be used to replace one tooth or all your teeth but unfortunately, the procedure usually lasts for months because firstly, the bone socket of the extracted tooth must heal and secondly, the jawbone needs to grow over the implant in order to support the crown and function like a normal tooth. Recently has also become popular the so-called immediate implant which involves insertion of the titanium post into the jawbone almost immediately after tooth extraction. However, this type of implant is done only if the bone socket is smaller than the implant.
Insertion of dental implants literally involves drilling into the jawbone. The surgical procedure itself is painless because the patient is always given a local anesthesia. Most people who underwent the procedure say that it feels similar to a tooth extraction. However, the site of the implant is sore for a few days to few weeks after the surgery. The pain is usually managed with over-the-counter pain medications, while the patients are also recommended to eat only soft foods for a certain period of time to allow the implantation site to heal faster. If the missing tooth is on a visible place, the patients are sometimes given a temporary bridge until the crown is put in place.
As already mentioned earlier, dental implants can last a lifetime with proper care and oral hygiene which basically involves only regular teeth brushing, flossing and dental check ups, just like if you would have real teeth.
